CONCURRENT SESSION 3: JCPOA and Progress on Civil Nuclear Cooperation with Iran

Klemen POLAK, Head, JCPOA Procurement Channel Section; Counsellor, European Union Delegation to the International Organizations in Vienna


In 2001, Klemen Polak joined the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been mainly dealing with multilateral issues, particularly in the field of non-proliferation and disarmament, ever since. In 2012, he joined the EU team in charge of the E3/EU+3 and Iran negotiating process as a Policy Adviser for nuclear issues. In this capacity, he was fully engaged in the E3/EU+3 nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Following the entry-into-force of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the so-called "Iran Nuclear Deal"), he assumed the position of the Delegated Coordinator of the Procurement Working Group established by the JCPOA. At the moment, he is the Head of the newly established JCPOA Procurement Channel Section in the EU Delegation in Vienna responsible for the overall coordination of the functioning of the Procurement Working Group. 

He has previously served as the Head of the UN Department in the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Earlier he had occupied different posts in the Ministry, and served six years at the Slovenian Permanent Mission to International Organisation in Vienna (2004-2010).

He graduated from the University of Ljubljana and has a Master in International Relations from the Danube University. In 2009, he participated in the special UN Programme of Fellowship on Disarmament.
