KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Russia and the Future of Nuclear Energy

Nikolai SPASSKIY, Ambassador; Deputy Director General for International Relations, State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, Russian Federation


Since April 2008, Mr Spassky has served as Deputy Director General for International Relations of the Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (ROSATOM).In 2006–2008, he served as State Secretary and Deputy Director of ROSATOM.

Before joining the Agency, Nikolay Spassky enjoyed a long a successful diplomatic career. In 1997, he was appointed an ambassador to Italy and San Marino, where he worked until taking the office of Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council (2004-2006). In 2000 he was awarded a rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

He started his career as an assistant with the Press Department of the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs and made it to First Secretary of the US and Canada Department of the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1991, Mr Spassky was appointed an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and after serving as Expert, Deputy Director, and First Deputy Director, he rose to Director of the North American Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a member of the Ministry Board.

Graduated from the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO-University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Holds a PhD in History.
