KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Russia and the Global Nuclear Order

Sergey LAVROV, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russian Federation


Sergey Lavrov was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia in 2004 and has been holding this position ever since. He has a diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and is a full Chevalier of the Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’. He is a permanent member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Sergey Lavrov served as a Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation at the UN from 1994 to 2004. He was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia in 1992 and has remained in this capacity until 1994.

Sergey Lavrov worked as Head of the Department of International Organizations and then Director of the Department of International Organizations and Global Problems of the MFA of Russia (1990–1992). From 1988 to 1990 he was Deputy Head of the Department of International Economic Relations of the MFA of the USSR. In the period from 1981 to 1988 he has held several positions (First Secretary, Advisor and Chief Advisor) at the Permanent Mission of USSR to the UN in New York.

Sergey Lavrov started his diplomatic career at the Embassy of the USSR in Sri-Lanka from 1972 to 1976. He then returned to the MFA Central Office in Moscow to work at the Department of International Organizations in different capacities from 1976 to 1981.

Graduated from the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO-University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
