Brigadier
(Retired) Naeem Ahmad Salik is currently teaching at the Department of Nuclear
Politics and Strategic Stability at the Faculty of Contemporary Studies at the National Defence
University, Islamabad. He has until recently been a
visiting scholar at School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins
University. Prior to this
he was a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C.
from January 2006 to March 2007. Before his retirement at the end of October
2005, he served for more than five years as Director for Arms Control and
Disarmament Affairs at the Strategic Plans Division, the Secretariat of
Pakistan's National Command Authority. Before taking over as Director in May
2001 he had served as a Deputy Director since March 1999. In a career spanning
31 years, he gained experience of a variety of military assignments ranging
from Command, Staff, Instructional and research related pursuits. In
recognition of his meritorious service he was awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz
(Distinguished Service Medal). He holds a Masters in History from the Punjab University
(1981), a B.Sc. Honours in War Studies from the Baluchistan
University (1985) and M.Sc. in
International Politics & Strategic Studies from the University
of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK
(1989). His
areas of expertise include South Asian security with special reference to
Indian and Pakistani policies on nuclear and missile issues, nuclear and
conventional confidence building measures, arms control and disarmament issues,
nuclear non-proliferation regimes, nuclear safety and security and export
controls. His book on ‘Genesis of South Asian Nuclear Deterrence' has been
recently released by Oxford University Press.
