Mitsuru KITANO

Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano has served as Permanent Representative of Japan in Vienna since 2014. Before assuming his current post, he held the position of Director-General of the Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Over the past five years, he has been actively engaged in disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. From 2015 to 2017, he has coordinated international efforts for the entry into force of the CTBT, since Japan served as co-coordinator of Conference of states parties of the CTBT for that purpose. He participated in the 2015 Review Conference of the NPT, and a number of Preparatory Committees for the NPT review process. He has spoken at a number of international events and took part in various panel discussions. Furthermore, he has published books and articles on these topics in both Japanese and English.

His academic credentials include a B.A. in sociology from University of Tokyo and a M.A. in international relations from University of Geneva (Graduate Institute of International Studies).
